Rowey's Blog - Fishing Wedge Island

A day of fishing at Wedge Island is something of a fishing enthusiast's dreams, or it was for me anyway.

By following a few basic tips, fishing on Wedge Island is a magical experience. The best way to plan it out, is to drive down the day before, and to rent a house in Marion, or even better still in Pondalowie Bay. To make your trip even better, be sure to pay a visit to the tavern, and grab a wood-fired pizza and a frothy. I can assure you that you won't regret it, it's by far the best meal in the whole area.

But make sure to not make your visit a long one, as drinking too much the night before will make fishing in the Southern Ocean a rough day.

I woke up at 6:00am for a leisurely drive to Pondi to meet Mark Graham from Marion Bay Fishing Carters, who was our skipper for the day. He's a great bloke, and an even better skipper.

With formalities out of the way, we climb our way into the 33 foot long fibreglass boat , with plenty of room and a toilet, it is a marvelous boat, equipped with the best rods and reels, eliminating the need for you to take your own Whiting, Snapper or Tuna rods.

Soon enough we load up the boat and head for Wedge Island, a 90 minute trip trawling for Tuna along the way, if you’re lucky enough.

We had a couple of hook ups, and even before 10:00am we already had two or three 30kg Tunas in the tub.

As is the case with many religious congregations, our fishing trip involved a bottle of Prosecco or sparkling red wine, as many of my trips do.

Having the right skipper and ideal wind conditions is critical to the success of your day on the water. Whopper Whiting of more than 50 cm , Flathead, Nannygai, Snapper and even Kingfish can all be found, and are great fun catching.

Wedge Island provides the opportunity to fish in low waters or drift over Snapper grounds more than 60 meters deep. One thing is for sure, it's plenty of fun, and I can never get enough of the action.

Usually Mark likes to have us in by 4:00pm, but there is never a big rush to pull the anchor up, and enjoy a few more cold ones. clean the fish and drop the fillets on ice.

As soon as we reach dry land, it's back to the Marion Bay Tavern for a meal and a drink to cap off a great day. At this point you can choose to keep the good times rolling and stay another night, or drive home. Although usually the level of alcohol consumption will make the decision for you, and please remember to not drink and drive.

If you would like to get in contact with Marion Bay Fishing Charters, ring 0427120040. Mark can either organize accommodation in Marion Bay or Pondi, or even take you out to stay on Wedge Island.

Rowey's Fishing Show is sending one person and five of their mates on a trip to Wedge Island, just as I did. Stay tuned for more details, but in the meantime, send me your best catch to onair@fiveaa.com.au and you could win our weekly $50 Tackle World voucher.

Happy fishing,

Rowey.
